long good thread arguing for a chemical origin of mass obesityhttps://twitter.com/mold_time/status/1412827749828513800 …

"many of these claims are wrong or bad" probably, lots of good objections to specifics in replies "its not monocausal" totally obesity is a complex phenomenon. but the rapid global spread is v interesting and a lot of standard stories dont seem adequate to capture this

tighter synthesis is that the chemicals cause obesity through effect on body's set point
-
are we saying different things that seems like a subset of what i was saying i probably wasnt very clear. hm

yeah I'd agree with this! the altitude thing is super cool tho, I wonder what's up with that. reading the lab animal paper too rn. still a very cool thread that raises a bunch of interesting questions.
-
people who live at high altitude also have lesser cancer rates the proposed mechanism I've seen there is radiation hormesis from greater cosmic background radiation

Some people don’t have cancer so people with cancer should just try not having cancer by doing whatever those people do. I had no trouble controlling my weight. Until I was on IV antibiotics. Depression, weight issues and eventually an autoimmune disease followed.

i think the right way to frame it is that the stability of each individual’s bodyweight up through very recent times is the stylized fact in need of interpretation: in historically normal conditions some force was constraining ppl to act in a way that usually preserved weight…
-
… whereas more recently some new factor has caused ppl following this natural force to systematically overeat (as though the force was systematically miscalculating CI&CO), yet when ppl track CI & CO explicitly and exhaustively they can still get a healthy weight deliberately

Those groups also tend to gravitate towards sports appropriate to body type and use targeted, temporary changes in bodyweight. Steroids also give way more control over body comp. Super muscular people with single digit bf% are almost nonexistent in nature.
