atheism is a religion, so i don't see the problem. they just hold an extremely boring, albeit old, view on the status of divinity. we tolerate all kinds of boring, old religions, so we can make room for these too.
For me, it's not an abstract problem with atheists and religious authority, so much as not wanting the founders of an institution to be rolling in their graves over your use of the endowment they gave you. Seems rude, imo
To get to this point means that everyone involved in the institution no longer thinks it serves any legitimate function or deserves any kind of respect — it is just an office to be distributed, spoils for patronage
