I went on a rant about this once when I was TAing a class of first year PHD microeconomics St Petersburg Paradox "It's not a goddamn paradox! Your model just sucks!" https://twitter.com/LucioMM1/status/1430616221347614721 …

calling anything other than Russell's (in any of its incarnations) a paradox is isomorphic to that Alanis Morissette song

eh semantic paradoxes aren't just a rehashing of russell's paradox, though they are spiritual kin

hm do you have an example? not familiar with them at least under that name

well the obvious candidate is the classic liar's paradox the key difference i think is that russell's paradox requires no definition of truth-in-a-model, or a truth predicate, or what have you there are also non-semantic paradoxes like richard's paradox

i guess if you wanted to you could claim that these are all the same insofar as they all involve self-reference, but you can get strict paradox without self-reference too see:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yablo%27s_paradox …

oh thats clever but doesnt seem substantially different in practice

its a cute way around claiming self-reference by making the self reference spread over multiple statements but ok come on lets simply acknowledge that the statements are functionally interdependent in a single system

well ok if you want to broaden the class of paradoxes that are isomorphic to russell's as just reference paradoxes, then yeah i guess they're all just isomorphic
