1/3 Sometimes people ask - if Music/Religion/Literature really contains such profoundly transformative ideas, why hasn't it made people live up to its own standards yet? Why doesn't Christianity make Christs, why doesn't YA fiction make great-hearted heroes?

2/3 Because there are countervailing trends. Those trends exist for a reason, eg, if literature or religion understood them completely it would be able to subsume those trends into itself. In the meantime, though, religion and art both manage to continue, and change lives.
