Perhaps its a bit of 'not judging a book by its cover' but then not really taking that to heart. They read thin pages of delicate ink and paper and they take their meaning at face value, and only skin deep. They are rarely changed by literature or art because they choose not too.

How do people even apply the morals of fantasy YA lit to their lives? I'm not sure I've been in such a situation. Am I supposed to be looking for evil conspiracies to fight against?

One way for authors to call readers attentions to IRL subtleties; they use obvious extremes then "explain down". This way they can catch the attention of people who think the subtle form is okay. Slippery slope argument where you start at the bottom. Not only way but it's useful
