do you Trust Experts

like if expertise were worth listening to uncritically then you wouldnt have to worry about them being wrong and hedging your bets because theyre 100% right and not just following a fad right

like the right thing to do if you live in the 1910s is to listen to all of the experts who are telling you actually eugenics is the best thing we could possibly do as a society

"that sounds fake" oh perhaps you should check out an experts opinion on this matterhttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1274428075741114368?s=19 …

so like if im understanding the norm correctly the thing to do is be an outspoken eugenicist in the 1910s to Believe Experts and then just feel bad about yourself but not really after WWII, not really because you are continuing to Believe Experts and theyre just different now

and you dont feel any cognitive dissonance about any of this
Show this thread -
forget out of sample testing do you even test your preferred norms on past fucking data to see what would happen if you followed them I mean jesus christ

Pretty timeist of you to only worry about past expert views and not the opinions of future experts.
-
Being timeist is definitely the right approach. I only listen to future experts now. 2 out of 3 precogs agree that you will come to agree with this

Isn't that basically what CS Lewis argued for w/ regard to old books? Basically that all experts are bound by the errors and trends of their time, and thus one should read broadly across time
