Can someone explain why the everyday cleanliness of my apartment is any of my landlords business? Inspections should be for material damage to the property, not some enforcement of some shitty protestant cleaning ethichttps://twitter.com/fvathynevgl/status/1429087259916128264 …

Yeah I think so? I haven't read a significant sample of leases in the country, but they tend to be full of "we'll never enforce this unless we want to kick you out" clauses My last included a clause about not "causing annoyance" to the landlord
-
Damn. Should invest in Irish houses if landlords are literal Lords there.

I imagine it’s meant to prevent a Hoarders situation where no security deposit in the world is gonna cover that pest/mold remediation cost

Better question: this is legal in Ireland?
-
Fun fact: property is a constitutionally protected right here, there's significant limitations on what you can do with your are actually tricky to get legislated, fwiu I could see someone challenging a piece of legislation limiting lease clauses on those grounds

Do you think this is to protect the landlord from hoarders? You could be a level of unclean that causes damage/bugs. But usually that's extreme
-
I've seen this a couple of times but I'd expect bugs or damage fall under "material damage to the property", not general cleanliness

The lease template I inherited from the previous owner of my duplex had all kinds of clauses that looked like they were the result of hard-won experience. He was kind of a slum lord and had some wild stories to tell about some of the people he'd evicted

It's normal in the US, and you have to do it or accept that insurers will just laugh at you for damages sought when a tenant was gross or neglectful and you need to do a full gut renovation
-
I dont believe ive ever had a lease like this and I read them pretty thoroughly before I sign
