wild so apparently the Chinese invasion of Taiwan would involve lots of converted, unarmored commercial vessels to carry troops this seems like a bad idea in the sense that they would be easy to sink, and doing so would cripple chinas exporting ability?https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2021/07/27/thousands-of-ships-millions-of-troops-china-is-assembling-a-huge-assault-flotilla-for-a-possible-attack-on-taiwan/amp/ …

1). Big merchant ships are actually hard to sink, unless you can set them on fire (which isn't as easy as it sound). And they would still have escorts to provide some defense. 2). Even if they lose a bunch, they can get more shipping hulls/pay for ships from various places..

If they have sufficient air cover and naval support (and that close to the mainland I imagine they would?) they may not be that easy to sink

Would also cripple our importing ability from China, but I suppose that's less bad for us than for them.

In the case of a war most shipping routes to China get blocked anyway; they intend to maintain trade over land

Sink some, sure. They’re okay with that. This is the problem. They’re okay with a lot of things we aren’t.

The best news here is that it makes it quite a lot harder to hide preparations. If they can’t achieve a decent level of surprise deterrence should work. Though this week hasn’t strictly helped with that. As you addressed.

Pretty sure the United States would just seize all the cruise ships in a similar scenario. Ie Cuba.
