That was definitely a tough part. The agency was careful to limit the commitments, but of course the family was extremely eager for any time I could give. And honestly, I’m not confident my time was actually worth more than money would have been.

That said, it was absolutely valuable for me, and certainly valuable for cultural integration, and I would highly recommend anyone who can make the time to do it. But nobody should feel bad for “just” giving financially, it’s definitely needed.
