The argument is being made that interpreters worked for us and therefore there is some kind of moral obligation to save them. But it is standard for the US to pay well - maybe 5x+ what local pay would be, in recognition of the risk. This is hazard pay.

So from that angle, not negotiating repatriation in your mercenary contract in favor of more cash, and then demanding repatriation, is claiming the right to rewrite the contract retroactively - it is taking the hazard pay and then trying to avoid the hazard.
