Interesting. I agree that the Common Man is more class coded than other factors. I'm more curious as to what you think it's displaced by: "the diverse person" - I've never heard of this trope. But am I right in understanding you mean something race/gender/sexuality coded?

a) All tropes are technically "non universal" as they highlight some quality not shared by all b) regardless of which trope, universality is found through empathy for particularities, not the leveling of them, no? the universal *thru/in* the particular has always been the game
