I dont know that there was much racially coded about Common Man notions, it was a much more general class i think. race and sex seemed incidental to it at most (and more novel classifications didnt even enter the picture)

its maybe more like a universal view of a condition was replaced with something much narrower. and I think it lost some focus along the way
