this is a real thing and astutely observed. I think there's been some drift away from the norms that were present 3 or 4 years ago and we've moved into some new, worse territory that has a lot more grift and a lot more culty vibes to it.https://twitter.com/deepfates/status/1426246548589977602 …

why its more boring isnt clear to me. maybe its partly that the noospheric environment has changed, partly compositional effects. also worth noting we've just gotten older.
-
another potential explanation is that we've mapped a lot of territory since then. 2014-16 was a sort of revolutionary period on the internet; since then things have sort of settled into a depressing familiar routine. we roughly understand it, its no longer pleasantly bewildering

i think sonya and visa are both in spitting distance of outright grifting, and many people think they’re across the line. not sure if there are others who trigger that instinct.

I’m wondering about this question too. I kind of have some sense of it in that it feels like there are more indirect adjacencies with self-promotional projects. More broadly I wonder what impact the pandemic had; as more people became more online did the internet get less weird?

people don't have to be making money to be benefiting from a cult of personality. in fact people don't have to want to start a cult of personality, to become the focus of one
