i dunno, my take on this phenomenon, which i've thought about a bunch of times, is the ultra-whiggish one: we've actually gotten way way better at so many things. we condescend to the cute little ancient thinkers but in so many ways they just suck at what they're doing!

not just philosophy stuff but basic storytelling, creating engaging characters, avoiding plot holes and stuff to preserve suspension of disbelief, etc. the craft has improved!

i think they're cool and interesting in lots of ways but i feel like people get off on overpraising them to the point of delusion. like beowulf is neat but it also kinda sucks, we can say that

its more like knowing how to use a computer in 2021 to program something vs just groping toward the idea of programming in the 19th century our tools and output are in many ways much better but in another way starting from nothing to imagining code is a much harder problem
