The war against legacy admissions in elite schools seems somewhat quixotic to me, given that the main benefit meritocratic strivers garner from such schools is less their access to professors, than being socialized and networked into an elite represented by...the legacy students. https://twitter.com/samhaselby/status/1425443005754978305 …

personally i favor a quota for legacy admission, but charge them extra. legalize and tax elite corruption!

Meritocracy feels like a trap but I can't find my way out of it: Hard work and effort produces the best people and best potential outcomes, so hard work should be perceived as necessary. The rub comes in the "is it sufficient?" Well, there's always chance in success...

... but there's also a whole heaping of nepotism, plutocracy, and just plain luck involved with connections. How much of that is baked in to the process of exploring the space of inventions and products, and how much of that is social that we can eliminate? Should we?

It's a mess really, but I will repeat this: when we reach a society where no one cares about putting in effort or hard work because they think it is not relevant to success... we are fucked.

Yeap. I feel like one *has to believe* that their hard work and effort matters, whether or not it does. Because if you don't... no bueno.

The immediate follow-up is, how much can we change to ensure that hard work and effort does matter? How much can we drive the system toward an actual meritocracy and undo the playing field effects of wealth and nepotism.

make markets as competitive as possible so that on the margin it is more costly to indulge in nepotism

think you're wrong here. lack of market efficiency helps disguise the takeover of all labor by automation and tech work. we don't have the social technology to handle the change without uncompetitive practices. have to wait for the dialectics of progress, i think.
