wonder if alot of ppls politics make sense as consistent over time if they secretly dont actually care about object level views but just glom onto whichever faction vaguely seems more or less authoritarian at any given time

General principles are always wrong, sure. But they're stable in various ways. They don't tend to be self-consuming over short periods (the way emergency ideologies often are). They're often legible and somewhat internally consistent, which helps in communication.

I'm going to explain the same idea very differently to a marxist than to somebody who subscribes to austrian economics because those two groups use the same words to refer to different things. Knowing which word to use helps a lot!
