this of course leads to the question "what is a mental illness anyway and who even gets to determine that huh" and of course this objection is absolutely right i dont think this is much a rebuttal of the basic point, affective point granted
maybe one can imagine history as a series of waves of Types of Guy gaining a foothold in society, some lindier than others. ive proposed this elsewhere imagine an evolutionary game theoretical model basically. simple memetic selection. which types of guy survive to next stage
homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto but societies seem to have vastly different arrays of types of guy maybe each is individually comprehensible but their relative distributions seem quite variable, and some societies parse as quite alien
and of course there are emergent properties that fall out of the specific distribution of types of guy
i was going to say something about lotka-volterra but realized i was just going to end up at the old meme but forget weak/strong etc, done to death. I wonder what other cycles over different slices of guy might existpic.twitter.com/GnDbOhPVWe
in conclusion my guess is that there are no evolutionarily stable strategies for types of guy good luck!
Add in idea that many early adopters of internet were shut ins etc and there’s a kind of crazy that’s been hard coded into internet DNA from start
Now further suppose there is a technomic desire to facilitate maximum dissociation from reality building itself from networked tech. Weeeeee.
This corner of the internet has always existed (Tumblr comes to mind for example) and people have always gawked at it. I really don't think it's grown all that much, though tik tok is different.
A lot of these people are teens with shitty offline lives (now exacerbated by pandemic life) and w/e internet culture/community they find probably ends being all they have. Not really the same as "oh look at how crazy society has become" because it's always been crazy.
