There's a small segment of faculty and administrators with disproportionate political power within the university. The snakes in dying departments saw the writing on the wall 20+yrs ago and invested heavily in administrative careers

By now these people understand that the survival of their fields depends on the continuous encouragement of student mobs. The craziness is the last driver of student demand for those fields.

as long as it stays there. but it is very easy to motivate a group to enforce some penalty on others if they undergo it themselves first.
