having a career talk with my boss after my skip level told him that his other direct reports wanted more career advice "so that seems like a good idea. i mean i never think about 'career plans' personally but that seems like something worth doing"

I imagine theres still an extent to which that holds in some backwaters or in some really fucked up work environments. like academia or sales. but generally the atmosphere feels much more honest and open and i appreciate that development in my little niche at least

I've told a couple of bosses who asked the 'Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?' question not to worry about it. If THEY want me somewhere, just say so. Otherwise I consider it my responsibility to train and pursue... not theirs. The both accepted that for what it meant.

I’m passionate about almost nothing related to work. But paychecks are useful for funding things I am passionate about.

I saw someone on Twitter with a bio that said "deeply passionate about Agile." I didn't expect the passing feeling of anger I felt to this inauthentic stranger on the internet.

They might not find it meaningful, but they might still enjoy doing it and the community surrounding it. Should we really project top-of-pyramid self-actualization to those not striving for it or without the capacity, even if they themselves ought to consider it?

A few years ago HR depts everywhere memed themselves into thinking that the ideal candidate was Passionate about the field Passionate about the company (and its values) Passionate about their (prospective) position in particular But there aren't enough of those to run a company

Frankly passion is on a curve, I worked on something cool and high value two years ago and that was a high, and since then much more of my work has been rote But then I got to mentor some interns this summer, and that was cool
