I wonder if covid has sort of hit a sweet spot in terms of being very infections, and just virulent enough to cause serious damage, but not enough for people to get properly serious about actually stopping the thing

like, I imagine the overall response would probably be quite a bit different if IFR were 5% instead of ~.5% Total death toll would still be higher for sure, but not convinced it would be 10x

I'm pretty sure if we had to face a genuinely apocalyptic threat we'd just shape up and face it. The US was a shitshow before and after WW2 as well, it still stepped up to the occasion.

It has to be framed precisely and immediately as catastrophic. Let's say gigantic inundations : step up, all in line, people in order. OTOH, covid like epidemy, low death rate and supply chain djsruption : meh, disorganisation, etc...
