this is genuinely bad news, afaict it’s yet another big bad thing there really isn’t a plan for, just one lab leak away we have all experienced, firsthand now, one way that plays out, and seen how good a “plan” there ishttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1420989331242557448 …

im actually kind of shaken about this. getting all the way to mirror cyanobacteria is quite a few steps ahead of where we are but it seems like things are moving very quickly.

this scares me in a way that even things like nuclear war don't because even a flame deluge isnt super likely to actually cause complete human extinction, much less generally eliminate most life

So as terrifying as this stuff is I think there's probably also some questions that need answering- like why earth life is chiral all in one direction as opposed to a mix. I'm willing to bet that like with the mirrored (heh) matter/antimatter problem there's some natural check

If the wiki (been a bit since I looked up anything about chirality) is anything to go off of, it *does* look like some simple chiral molecules can be interacted with, but their interactions change based on L/R iterations. Hopefully means mirror cyanobacteria can be predated on.

There's also keeping in mind that masses of chiral c-bacties will represent a massive ecological niche. How long before enterprising microbes manage to find a way to exploit even if not technically predation? Still you're 100% right, this is aggressively scarier than nukes.

yeah, I'm /hoping/ there might be some natural checks on this I also tried to talk myself into being less concerned and there may be some artificial partial solutions to the problem as wellhttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1421041467213049857?s=19 …

I'd assume there's got to be, otherwise life would exist using all chiral modalities. Also have to wonder about the no predation thing- if indistinguishable from chiral variants, would macropredators be able to tell & if not predator collapse lead to non-mirror blooms as well?
