Bird site has left me wondering whether normal people do in fact care about things and try to learn about those things for entirely straightforward reasons. Like, there's got to be a journo out there who would've joined Twitter but it was his daughter's dance recital

I'm not sure "people don't believe things" is the right takeaway. Rather, most people's beliefs are wide and shallow. This is why gun rights have been advancing despite polling going the other direction - most people "care" but only in a very marginal way. (And thank God!)
