we know about a giant 1700 earthquake off the West Coast partly because the Japanese kept meticulous tsunami records for centuries and in 1700 they recorded a freak tsunami that hit them without any noticeable earthquake

I was near the epicenter of a 5.9 earthquake in California and my town growing up was destroyed by a flood nothing gets the blood flowing like the Gods trying to strike you down
