one thing I think people dont consider enough when looking at eg the ability of the Taliban to resist US force, or the Viet Cong, or whatever, in the context of the value of small arms is that the US did not adopt the tactic of "kill everyone until the fighting stops"

What is your opinion of Soviet policy in the invasion of Afghanistan? The brutality in terms of civilian lives lost as a proportion of the population is greater than the US actions in Vietnam, but it too ended disastrously for the occupiers.

im not saying this strategy will always work but I am also betting they didnt adopt a strategy of "shoot literally everyone not in a soviet uniform" hm. did they?

I think back to the OT bible where it was attempted but still failed. I am not sure humans are capable of such brutality. Not that I would risk it, I would be first against the wall.
