one thing I think people dont consider enough when looking at eg the ability of the Taliban to resist US force, or the Viet Cong, or whatever, in the context of the value of small arms is that the US did not adopt the tactic of "kill everyone until the fighting stops"
maybe they just failed to pull it off! idk were they actively just bombing every city in Afghanistan into rubble and shooting the survivors en masse?

That's a good question, I'm not sure. I am assuming that the USSR strategy was on the more indiscriminate end of the spectrum, but I guess you're talking about genocide, not just indiscriminate collective punishment.

No they did not. They did do free fire scorched earth zones in some zones. But it is a huge place. Chechnya they tried everything and succeeded by finding a proxy and brutality.
