one thing I think people dont consider enough when looking at eg the ability of the Taliban to resist US force, or the Viet Cong, or whatever, in the context of the value of small arms is that the US did not adopt the tactic of "kill everyone until the fighting stops"

What is your opinion of Soviet policy in the invasion of Afghanistan? The brutality in terms of civilian lives lost as a proportion of the population is greater than the US actions in Vietnam, but it too ended disastrously for the occupiers.

im not saying this strategy will always work but I am also betting they didnt adopt a strategy of "shoot literally everyone not in a soviet uniform" hm. did they?

The Huns, and I believe the Mongols as well, used this tactic both as a means of conquest and as a threat to others who might resist. It worked: many cities surrendered without any resistance to avoid that fate. Those who did resist became new examples.

this was eventually going to happen with Generalplan Ost but of course they didnt manage to sweep the Soviet army from the field
