"The vigilantism of widespread gun ownership puts Black Americans in an especially vulnerable position given the brutality and human cost of discriminatory policing." But... if policing is discriminatory and brutal, then isn't vigilantism comparatively better than otherwise?
Maybe vigilantism isn't particularly good but it seems very odd to assert that it is *worse* in light of a bad policing system.
"the intrinsic anti-Blackness of the unequal enforcement of gun laws" this is just kind of curious wording; of course unequal enforcement of gun laws is "anti-Black" (at least if it's unequal in favor of whites) so isn't "intrinsic anti-Blackness" just redundant word filler?
And then, finally, "the elegiac worship of the Second Amendment" is supposed to come across as pejorative but if you are the ACLU I feel like elegaic worship of constitutional rights is kind of your jam and you probably don't want to diss it.
It's fine for the ACLU to decide it's focused on certain constitutional rights and not others but it's very weird for the ACLU to go "yeah? those guys? they like, *worship* the constitution. kinda creepy you know?"
my interest is typically less "try to chronicle the fall of an institution" or "try to push back against the inexorable advance of entropy" and more just "dissect bizarre word spam"
people can churn this shit out faster than you can parse it but if its an enjoyable hobby for sure to nuts :)
