in my case I made a point of teaching myself to code and taking ML classes (just emerging as a megafield) after I finished my orals I'm not sure there's as straightforward a path to doing this now--data science is a little more regimented than it used to be

if possible it's also good to do internships. a second way in which I got lucky was that I went to school in Seattle a solid half of my class got Amazon contract work and that was very helpful in an industry job search
