Re: both tweets in this thread, it’s like this: TSMC is running full out & we’re still in a crisis. So pray we never lose access to its output even temporarily for the next ~5yrs until we can replace it on CONUS. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1418206923493711872 …

Related to this, the position of folks like Drenzer & Drum, i.e. that the current crisis simply shows that demand is too high & not that there's any geopolitical risk re: semi fab concentration in Asia, is just fantastically stupid.https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/05/05/global-supply-chains-will-be-fine/ …

What this crisis shows is that we're so dependent on high-end semis that even a mere demand surge is causing problems, therefore putting all our production of such critical things in one area (where the drums of war are beating super loud) is totally insane.

The lazy contrarianism of "supply chain concentration in high-end semis is not a problem" is so safe & lame, because the moment it becomes a problem everyone has bigger things to worry about than the fact that you, columnist dude, were dead wrong about a catastrophe.

I'm reminded of back in 2/2020, when Drum undertook to debunk the coronavirus panic. This was the same kind of safe contrarian take on a major risk. https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2020/02/just-how-deadly-is-covid-19/ …pic.twitter.com/BNy1Ftn7yK
