I view the difference is that person #1 does good out of choice, person #2 does it out of nature and would actually have to try to be not good.

It's all fraught with danger and very relevant for the time. For me, I don't care if I appear good, since people aren't just. Many friends think I'm better than I know myself to be. And I don't trust my own judgment of myself, so looking good to myself is pointless.
