thinking on it a little more the difference between (i) and (ii) might be "wanting to be Good" at a very primitive level as an end in itself, vs wanting to be able to plausibly identify as Good to oneself

I think that makes sense. And the charitable difference between #1 and #2 is that #2 includes not doing bad, because helping a hundred old ladies across the street and then murdering a prostitute in an alleyway is still not the behavior of a good person.

I think (i) and (ii) are essentially same, no? What's the diff? What's the function of “someone who is” in (ii)?

"identity" is an impt variable imo. the self from which goodness springs vs self as incidental/instrumental to goodness that comes from elsewhere
