Over the course of six months or so mine has greatly improved, but every month I’ll try push-ups or benching again and it hasn’t been ready yet. At some point I think pain is just going to be part of the process and not something to avoid (in my case) probably due to scar tissue

Start VERY light. Knee pushups or light dumbells for bench. Also helps to warm up the joint. Scar tissue is a bitch though, not sure what best remedy for that is.
