This is interesting because strictly defining the terms of first use is very unique, not sure any other country does this. We have boomers offshore but if they counterfire it escalates to MAD. Could put THAAD systems in Japan but it’s be pretty easy to saturate them.

Honestly if this is legit then the easiest way for Japan to avoid being nuked is to do as China asks and not intervene wrt Taiwan. Really in 20-30 years critical industries will have been shifted out of East Asia to the extent that it won’t matter to us if Taiwan is invaded.

Over a long enough timescale Japan will always revert to being a regional subject of China. It’s just a matter of geography and demographics.
