Lifestyle (Europeans walk more than Americans in average by a decent margin I think?) and cultural dietary habits (“poor people food” being fat vs. sugar rich) seem like they significantly confound this comparison

I’m not saying “diets” as in purposeful modification of habit I’m saying “diet” as in your normal habits. Dismissing all dietary impacts on fitness doesn’t make sense Same for exercise: maybe trying to get fit doesn’t work but your normal life encouraging fitness does

Sure isolating to single variables is obviously not going to be properly predictive for what is almost definitely a many variable effect but I think your dismissal of monetary effects on the basis of a comparison to Europe is weak
