there was someone writing about this, or maybe about lead something about how you can heuristically identify the cause of a problem by evaluating its spread eg, if it moves along major lines of travel its probably a contagious disease; along waterways, maybe a microparasite

there's no one common chemical that's present in the different kinds of junk food that makes rats get fat and isn't also in, like, 18th century bread. Maybe it's just a darwinian process of food becoming more rewarding to eat simply as a result of consumer preferences.

BTW, one thing I disagree about in the article. Is an increase from 2000 to 2400 calories a day really that small? Over a long period of time shouldn't that lead to considerable weight gain?
