theres an interesting difference in tone or _something_ that you can pick up from academics speaking for a general audience vs when they speak to people who have a detectable power level the former is quite performative. i dont trust it

That’s a thing, but not necessarily nefarious. High-level knowledge workers who work in mixed environments quickly learn (usually subconsciously, I’d guess) that different communication practices are required talking to e.g. a crowd with median IQ ~100 vs one with median IQ ~130.
