someone was telling me how they "figured out" the SAT verbal section; he "just" needed to memorize 50 words! collegeboard hates him! the example he gave was the word "ambivalent" makes me wonder if people treat english like chinese, just memorizing words wholesale

I had a stack of 2000 rare word flashcards for the GRE. I think maybe one of them showed up on the exam it was a pretty effective means of learning the words most of them I got from reading John Fowles novels and writing down unusual words

That’s why I could never study for the verbal sections of standardized tests: it felt pointless to memorize a bunch of words that may or may not come up.

its great when you know them because eventually they make thinking about related ideas much easier great expansion for your cognitive toolkit
