Sadly, from what we’ve seen trying to help the homeless & needy, yes.
Also what eigen alludes to by suggesting that trying to help an indigent parent or family with a CPS case could result in retaliation from CPS/losing your own kids. This was confirmed by former CPS staff.1 reply 1 retweet 43 likes -

Yes! I even wrote to a judge. I got indirectly threatened with prosecution over it. We were urged to give up by a family member who used to work for them who said we could lose our own kids if we continued. It’s some of the worst, most terrifying injustice I’ve seen up close.

wait so what's the standard of proof for losing your kids like, if you have a solid job and can afford an expensive lawyer and all that jazz and, crucially, aren't torturing your kids surely it's kinda hard for them to take them away?

never mention that CPS is the worst part of it. :( I have had literal nightmares and lost sleep for years over this stuff. Seen parents throw up and children become suicidal over the stress. :( It helps a lot that you care tho. Thank you.

kind of feel like if you have a right to an attorney in traffic court you should have a right to an attorney if they're going to take your goddamned kids away but it's a civil case, so nope

I mean people talk about a two tiered system of justice but christ although, my dad has said the DoL operates on similar principles in his practice with big companies they're wrong on the law so they'll back off if you actually fight it

iirc he has won dozens of cases in federal district court which the department of labor did not appeal so as to avoid creating circuitwide precedent
