superficially this is a normal homogeneous american suburb. I dropped my car off at a dealership for service and walked to a strip mall for coffee while they work on it. all the usual stores you'd expect are here. they are all however crumbling

Safeway was the most striking. Their shelves were badly stocked and shabby. I had spilled coffee on my shirt and wanted to wash it off. The drinking fountains were out of order but not labeled out of order. The bathrooms were locked.

I tried to reach the pharmacy to buy nicotine gum but someone's mobility scooter had broken in the aisle and blocked access. There were no seats near the in-store Starbucks, only a fleet of empty mobility scooters. I thought it would be weird to drink coffee on one of them

i am now squatting outside smoking some Turkish Silvers. (The cigarette store was, surprisingly, clean and well ordered.) Recently I have seen a middle-aged white couple maybe living out of their car and yelling at each other; an older tatterdemalion wandering and shouting;

I am not writing this thread to mock or complain about any of this. I'm just a bit surprised at the state of things. There is a strong Coming Apart vibe to the neighborhood and what feels like an evaporation of human and social capital, portending something awful
