this is a rotten place to be and if you just look at it outwardly it seems like it happened overnight, but the legal and bureaucratic infrastructure that enabled it to happen has been built slowly over more than a century

this is actually an interesting question (though the hypothetical is indeed very unlikely) Supremes are vulnerable only to united Congress + POTUS, who might be able to court-pack -- don't see many ways the bureaucracy could attack them directly
