Rent control is not the problem in SF. The problem is an entrenched bureaucracy that does everything in its power to restrict new building. In the face of this type of rent seeking behavior, rent control is a perfectly fine solution.

When faced with an artificially created vertical supply curve, rent control is a straight transfer. I’m fine with that.

People keep leaping on this. But it's clearly deliberate. Thomas Sowell used SF losing most of its black population as an example of liberalism not working. You have to consider that there might've been other considerations in the aftermath of the Zebra Murders.
