one thing that fell out of the @robertwrighter podcast with a guy who wrote a book on the Uyghurs is that much of the forced sterilization happening in xinjiang is _reportedly_ the result of xinjiang being brought into line with sterilization in the rest of china

one consistent position is that the CCP has been genociding the han people but that doesnt seem quite right because can a group really be said to genocide itself. that feels weird

so maybe typing this all out im thinking that the issue is with the definition of "genocide" which describes something that is clearly more horrific than random background murder or like equivalent amounts of automobile deaths

but nevertheless theres perhaps something to be desired about the use of _gens_ here

the discussion of this im listening to now is at about 31:00 in the most recent parrot room episode and the conversation with the uyghur guy is here i dont have strong / many opinions about it apart from its a little dry and i would be madder doing thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrJKZ6o40Uc …

i want to emphasize that for the sake of this thread that one should accept arguendo that uyghurs are simply being subjected to policy as it exists elsehwere, but only arguendo. i have no way of evaluating this claim empirically.

horrors of one-child policy, forced abortions, lost girls, that sort of thing was shouted by conservative/religious/sinoskeptic publications till it got boring
