On this point, we should recognize that the majority of people who go through traumatic experiences end up fine. We've memed ourselves into thinking that being traumatized is the natural response to terrible events, when in fact people are very resilient.https://twitter.com/AvidHalaby/status/1388963214470352896 …

This isn't to say some people don't experience long-term psychological effects from traumatic events, but like you say we should revise our priors down.

1. do you think iraq PTSD recognition was the trigger for recognizing sexual abuse of women, though? 2. why didn’t this happen when people identified and named “shell-shock?”
-
I think the abuse of women trauma thing came slightly later. hunch is it was maybe built on top of Iraq concepts. probably didnt come out of shell shock because who knows honestly. society less therapy language centric maybe

I hear about over accommodating on social media but never see it irl. It might be a regional thing though. Where I live asking for accomodations of any kind is a career poison pill that can follow you from job to job.

CPTSD is also getting some awareness now along with the realization that there is a wide difference between a soldier who undergoes a single incident of trauma and a child who is raised in trauma, to the point where their brain chemistry and shape physically alters.
-
A soldier, if they had a good upbringing, can remember the before time. The truly misfortunate child grows up with the sympathetic nervous system constantly engaged, a relentless, exhausting existence of fight or flight mode.
