We used to do that for a lot of institutions. And some of the insane elected positions in the US would do better by being chosen by lottery.

Unironically, we should do this for people who meet a particular test score / GPA cutoff. Everything past that (essays, rec letters, dumb charity trips, etc) is zero sum signaling that massively wastes time, advantages rich kids, and riddles kids with mental health issues.
