I normally agree with the two of you or see your points but all my personal experience and reason scream out that you are wrong. Perhaps we are interpreting two different things? Keeping everything else about the educational system and just doing this for smart kids seems bad.

Agreed. Socializing children to interact with and be responsible for people younger and older than them seems the better way to prevent that.

Nearly every other educational system across cultures does it this way and this is how most of the wealthiest amongst our society educate their kids. This strikes me as a meme that modern K-12 teachers have embraced because they were just as poorly socialized.
