what are some examples of "we have made something better and now people no longer like it even while agreeing that we solved some genuine problems" off the top of my head i was able to identify "world of warcraft expansions after WotLK" and "society over the last 250 years"

Imo the challenge is still there, indeed better balanced than ever, with muktiple tiers of content so every player can find a level that is tough enough to stay interested but not so tough as to drive them off. (which itself somehow makes the whole thing totally uncompelling)

To take an entirely normie example, this is why most basketball fans prefer March Madness to the NBA playoffs. A 64-team single elimination tournament is terrible for efficiently selecting the best team, but it's far more entertaining and endearing than a best-of-7 series.

I went through this w maplestory after the big bang update it was obviously better and I put more time into the game and had more fun but it lost all of that new car-smell feel-good sparkle discovery was half the fun
