If you were explaining to a child: what's an example of a problem that data science has solved or is helping to solve? Not like "the problem of targeted advertising" but something a kid might recognize as a problem-- health, hunger, poverty, etc

This is a great example. Probably the most significant application of ml so far (though fair question whether enabling 2 billion boomers to yell at each other online is going to prove a net positive).
