If you were explaining to a child: what's an example of a problem that data science has solved or is helping to solve? Not like "the problem of targeted advertising" but something a kid might recognize as a problem-- health, hunger, poverty, etc

lotsa kids also understand ads better than we tend to assume, especially if they watch youtube. kids know "copyright" as "the thing that is an issue if you use the wrong music in your video"

you could point to things like facial recognition; there's also cell classifiers in biology which are cool, and I think some robotic surgeons. and automated cars sooner or later. I think you can maybe lean on the "teaching robots to do things" angle
