Yes I completely agree with you. Not hiring him or firing him if he actually did something that warranted firing once he was there even if it was his first day would have been totally fine. This is just shitty and shows Apple didn't do any kind of due diligence.

I likely agree with you completely in spirit. But a friend of mine expressed a similar frustration, that Apple failed to do "due diligence" I totally reject that. It was not a failure to do "due diligence". It's not an information problem. The problem THE STANDARD IS THE MOB

It's chickenshit and caving to a mob will make it even harder to hire someone that a bunch of people who can't even make it out of their parents basements object to, but that's the culture they've created. They should have looked internally too.

what do you mean by "looked internally"?

I mean they should have known there would be internal objections to hiring someone who was not going to be an, ahem, cultural fit. The fact that they didn't anticipate this means they did a piss poor job. I obviously don't think it was right, but they should've known.

Yeah, I don't know, maybe. If I show you 100 candidates, complete with their tweets, blogs, quotes, books, etc, can you tell me beforehand who will be unacceptable? If 10 get canceled, are you telling me you can't find 10 others who have said problematic things?

Maybe. It's a very industry specific and position specific thing. Nobody would give a shit if he was just some guy programming ui. Again even if it does upset people as a company you have to have the stones to tell people to get bent and let a few walk.

I don't know. By your own standard of "due diligence", if the guy was just doing UI, you don't think it's possible for the mob to get after him? Your last paragraph is a total about-face, though. Is lack of due-diligence the issue? Or Apple's team being spineless pieces of shit?

You do your research and you make your decision. Caving after the fact is the absolute worst thing to do.
