the reason people actually get upset about their favorite artist being an asshole is that resonate with the shape of a creator's mind when you appreciate their work and then bam it turns out that that person wasnt who you thought they were and its both betrayal and revulsion

Of course there are some authors I read about and I like them even more. Vladimir Nabokov

sometimes I can sometimes I can't, it's different every time. Seems like it's much easier for me to ignore the artist when they lived over say 100 years ago, compared to someone who may still be alive, or who still feels contemporary. Not sure why this matters to me.
-
Also depends on medium. I find it easier to separate visual art from the artist than music, and it's easier to separate classical music from the composer than pop music. I'll happily engage with the emotions of classical music made by a jerk, but sometimes feel gross with pop

I feel about people who think they can know the author by their fiction like I do when I saw a woman go outsob the family members at the funeral for a man she admitted she'd spoken to twice. You were no less delusional if you never learned any contrary facts!

I think this applies even more to philosophers. Always have to keep an eye on what a philosopher's actual life was like, & I think it's entirely fair to read their philosophy in light of what they were as humans. This of course means Nietzsche gets judged very harshly.
-
You shall know them by their fruits If they followed their philosophy and were dreadful people, it's fair to reject it on that basis

I would say this is not quite high-res enough. There is definitely a "receptacle to the beauty of the universe" aspect to artists that may be entirely out of their control. What artists need to have staying power for me is transcendence.
-
Can they channel the beauty of the universe in such a way that they elevate it beyond what anybody else could do?
